X'mas Festival

Αγαπητοί γονείς και παιδιά,

Με την παρούσα επιστολή μας επιθυμούμε να σας ενημερώσουμε για τα παρακάτω:

1). Η ερχόμενη εβδομάδα είναι η τελευταία πριν τις διακοπές των Χριστουγέννων. Οι Χριστουγεννιάτικες Εορτές θα γίνουν ως εξής:

Παρασκευή βράδυ: 19η Δεκεμβρίου, 7.30 μ.μ.
Σάββατο πρωΐ: 20η Δεκεμβρίου, 11.15 π.μ.
Σάββατο απόγευμα: 20η Δεκεμβρίου, 3.15 μ.μ.

Τα παιδιά θα έλθουν κανονικά για μάθημα. Μετά το διάλειμμα θα παρουσιάσουν ένα ευχάριστο κι ενδιαφέρον πρόγραμμα, με χριστουγεννιάτικα και πρωτοχρονιάτικα κάλαντα, τραγούδια, ποιήματα και θεατρικά. Παρακαλούνται όλοι οι γονείς και κηδεμόνες να παρακολουθήσουν οπωσδήποτε και να προσφέρουν κεράσματα για τα παιδιά. Στις εκδηλώσεις αυτές θα δοθούν και τα επίσημα Πιστοποιητικά των εξετάσεων G.C.S.E. και A’ Level.

Μετά την Χριστουγεννιάτικη Εορτή θα δοθούν οι Έλεγχοι Προόδου για το Α’ Τρίμηνο.

2). Το Κολέγιο θα ανοίξει και πάλι μετά τις διακοπές των Χριστουγέννων ως εξής:

1). Next week we close for Christmas. Christmas Nativity Play: Friday 19th December at 7.30 pm, Saturday 20th December at 11.15 am, Saturday 20th December at 3.15 pm. Certificates for G.C.S.E. and A’ Level will be given at the end of the Play. Parents are kindly requested to offer snacks and soft drinks for the children. Progress Reports will be given after the Play.

2). The College will open again after Christmas: Thursday 8th January 2009, Friday 9th January 2009 and Saturday 10th January 2009.

Hellenic College Club

Every Thursday evening, 6.00 - 9.00 pm, we operate the College Club.

During the three hours the kids can learn Greek Dancing, they can play various games and the three teachers are also there for those of our pupils who need some additional help with the homework of the Hellenic College.

At the same time, but obviously in a different classroom, an Adult Class is offered to all those who would like to learn read, write and speak Greek.

Μαθήματα μπουζουκιού

Στο Κολέγιό μας κάθε Τρίτη απόγευμα διδάσκονται μαθήματα Ελληνικής Λαϊκής Μουσικής και Έγχορδων Οργάνων, ιδιαίτερα μπουζουκιού. Τα μαθήματα διδάσκει ο Γιάννης Πολυκανδριώτης, γόνος σπουδαίας ελληνικής μουσικής οικογένειας. Στο παρακάτω βίντεο φαίνεται ο δάσκαλος να διδάσκει τον μαθητή Χρήστο Κυριακίδη.

Στο Κολέγιό μας, την Παρασκευή 24η Οκτωβρίου και το Σάββατο 25η Οκτωβρίου, θα πραγματοποιηθούν ενδοσχολικοί Εορτασμοί για την Εθνική Επέτειο της 28ης Οκτωβρίου 1940.

Οι μαθητές / -τριες έχουν ετοιμάσει ωραία προγράμματα, με την βοήθεια των δασκάλων και των γονέων τους.

Backgammon

Backgammon Competition & Lunch

On Sunday 12th October 2008 the College Committee is organising a Backgammon Competition & Lunch at our Community Centre. This will start right after the Divine Liturgy at about 1.00 pm.

The Committee will also offer Lunch for those taking part in the Competition and for others who would like to attend. All money collected will be in financial support of our Hellenic College.

Yesterday and today we had various Holy Services for the Blessing of the New School Year at our College.

We prayed for a good year, for enlightenment of our pupils, for strength and spiritual power and for every academic success.

Ένας γονέας στέλνει γράμμα προς τους εκπαιδευτικούς και τους λέει:

.....Αγαπητοί μου,

.....Τα Σχολεία ξαναρχίζουν. Σας εμπιστευόμαστε και πάλι ό,τι πιο πολύτιμο έχουμε. Τα παιδιά μας. Ασφαλώς θα το 'χετε υπ' όψη. Συγγνώμη, που σας το ξαναθυμίζουμε. Σ' αυτά δεν διδάσκουμε εκείνο που θέλουμε. Δεν διδάσκουμε εκείνο που ξέρουμε. Διδάσκουμε εκείνο που είμαστε.

First Day of the Hellenic College

Today, Saturday 6th September 2008, it was the first day back to our College. It was very nice to see so many old and new faces, of pupils, parents and teachers. It seems like all of us had actually missed the College during the summer period. I think everyone is really happy to be back. And as we are so happy let's have two nice poems, one in English and one in Greek, about this first day back at School / College.

Classrooms' Themes

The General Theme for this College Year (2008-09) will be the “Byzantine Empire”.

Our Classrooms will have the following names / dedications:

- Constantine the Great
- Emperor Justinian
- Church of Saint Sophia
- Constantinople
- Byzantine Icons
- Emperor Constantine Palaeologos

Our students will research, work and produce (written or artistic) material on the theme of their Classroom.

Those students of our College who had taken their G.C.S.E. & A’ Level Exams in Modern Greek this summer have now got their results.

The sisters Souvalioti, Alexia and Marilina, who have got “A”s on the AS Level, were among the top ten students in the UK [total number of students: 186] who had got such a high mark (300/300) on this exam.

In the A2 Level out of 141 entries Sophia Pope was amongst the top ten who achieved the highest overall marks.

.

They all deserve our warmest congratulations on this excellent performance.

The Lessons Start

Dear Students, Teachers, Parents, Guardians and Benefactors of our College,

We welcome you back to our College and wish you all a blessed and prosperous new College Year.

Please allow us to inform you of the following:

1. Bouzouki Lessons are offered every Tuesday, 4.00-9.00 pm.

2. The College Club, offering various creative activities, operates every Thursday, 6.00-9.00 pm, at our Community Centre. On the same evening we have Dancing Lessons, 7.00-8.00 pm, as well as the Adult Greek Class, 7.00-9.00 pm.

3. On Fridays, 6.00-9.00 pm, we have the 5th and 6th Years, as well as G.C.S.E. and A’ Level Classes.

4. On Saturdays we operate two sessions, the morning session (10.00 am - 12.45 pm) and the afternoon session (2.00-5.00 pm). In both sessions we have Classes from Nursery up to Year 4. Between the two sessions, 1.00-2.00 pm, we teach Greek and Greek-Cypriot Traditional Dances.

5. Τhe College Fees are as follows:
£150: Annual Fee for one child.
£250: Annual Fee for two children.
£350: Annual Fee for three children.
£450: Annual Fee for four children.
Τhe Nursery and the Dancing Lessons will be offered for this College Year FREE OF CHARGE.

6. The Blessing of the new College Year will take place as follows:
Friday, 19th September 2008, 7.45 pm (for the Friday Classes)
Saturday, 20th September 2008, 12.15 pm (for the Saturday morning Classes)
Saturday, 20th September 2008, 4.30 pm (for the Saturday afternoon Classes)
The Parents and Guardians are kindly requested to attend the Blessing of the new College Year.

7. The Parents’ Committee invites all Parents and Guardians to its A.G.M., which is to take place on Friday 19th September 2008, at 6.30 pm, in order to discuss matters related to the running of our College. Tea and refreshments will be offered.

8. A Teachers’ and Parents’ Meeting is organised for Friday 19th September 2008, at 8.15 pm, after the Blessing of the new College Year.
