Blessing of the new School Year

Yesterday and today we had various Holy Services for the Blessing of the New School Year at our College.

We prayed for a good year, for enlightenment of our pupils, for strength and spiritual power and for every academic success.

Ένα γράμμα

Ένας γονέας στέλνει γράμμα προς τους εκπαιδευτικούς και τους λέει:

.....Αγαπητοί μου,

.....Τα Σχολεία ξαναρχίζουν. Σας εμπιστευόμαστε και πάλι ό,τι πιο πολύτιμο έχουμε. Τα παιδιά μας. Ασφαλώς θα το 'χετε υπ' όψη. Συγγνώμη, που σας το ξαναθυμίζουμε. Σ' αυτά δεν διδάσκουμε εκείνο που θέλουμε. Δεν διδάσκουμε εκείνο που ξέρουμε. Διδάσκουμε εκείνο που είμαστε.

First Day of the Hellenic College

Today, Saturday 6th September 2008, it was the first day back to our College. It was very nice to see so many old and new faces, of pupils, parents and teachers. It seems like all of us had actually missed the College during the summer period. I think everyone is really happy to be back. And as we are so happy let's have two nice poems, one in English and one in Greek, about this first day back at School / College.

The First Day of School

I wonder if my drawing will be as good as theirs

I wonder if they'll like me, or just be full of stares

I wonder if my teacher will look like mom or gram

And I wonder if my puppy will wonder where I am.

Πρώτη μέρα στό σχολειό

«Τόση βιάση καὶ σπουδή;

Γιὰ ποῦ πᾶς, καλὸ παιδί;

Κίνησες νωρὶς-νωρὶς

καὶ τρεχάτος προχωρεῖς;

Στάσου δὰ νὰ διασκεδάσεις

μὲ τὶς ὀμορφιὲς τῆς Πλάσης!

Κόψε ἀπ᾿ τὰ περβόλια πάλι

τοῦ χινόπωρου τὰ κάλλη!»

«Νὰ σταθῶ; Δὲν εὐκαιρῶ,

γιατὶ πάω στὸ φτερό.

Στὸ σχολειό μου π᾿ ἀγαπῶ!

Classrooms' Themes

The General Theme for this College Year (2008-09) will be the “Byzantine Empire”.

Our Classrooms will have the following names / dedications:

- Constantine the Great
- Emperor Justinian
- Church of Saint Sophia
- Constantinople
- Byzantine Icons
- Emperor Constantine Palaeologos

Our students will research, work and produce (written or artistic) material on the theme of their Classroom.

G.C.S.E. & A' Level Exam Results

Those students of our College who had taken their G.C.S.E. & A’ Level Exams in Modern Greek this summer have now got their results.

The sisters Souvalioti, Alexia and Marilina, who have got “A”s on the AS Level, were among the top ten students in the UK [total number of students: 186] who had got such a high mark (300/300) on this exam.

In the A2 Level out of 141 entries Sophia Pope was amongst the top ten who achieved the highest overall marks.

.

They all deserve our warmest congratulations on this excellent performance.

The Lessons Start

Dear Students, Teachers, Parents, Guardians and Benefactors of our College,

We welcome you back to our College and wish you all a blessed and prosperous new College Year.

Please allow us to inform you of the following:

1. Bouzouki Lessons are offered every Tuesday, 4.00-9.00 pm.

2. The College Club, offering various creative activities, operates every Thursday, 6.00-9.00 pm, at our Community Centre. On the same evening we have Dancing Lessons, 7.00-8.00 pm, as well as the Adult Greek Class, 7.00-9.00 pm.

3. On Fridays, 6.00-9.00 pm, we have the 5th and 6th Years, as well as G.C.S.E. and A’ Level Classes.

4. On Saturdays we operate two sessions, the morning session (10.00 am - 12.45 pm) and the afternoon session (2.00-5.00 pm). In both sessions we have Classes from Nursery up to Year 4. Between the two sessions, 1.00-2.00 pm, we teach Greek and Greek-Cypriot Traditional Dances.

5. Τhe College Fees are as follows:
£150: Annual Fee for one child.
£250: Annual Fee for two children.
£350: Annual Fee for three children.
£450: Annual Fee for four children.
Τhe Nursery and the Dancing Lessons will be offered for this College Year FREE OF CHARGE.

6. The Blessing of the new College Year will take place as follows:
Friday, 19th September 2008, 7.45 pm (for the Friday Classes)
Saturday, 20th September 2008, 12.15 pm (for the Saturday morning Classes)
Saturday, 20th September 2008, 4.30 pm (for the Saturday afternoon Classes)
The Parents and Guardians are kindly requested to attend the Blessing of the new College Year.

7. The Parents’ Committee invites all Parents and Guardians to its A.G.M., which is to take place on Friday 19th September 2008, at 6.30 pm, in order to discuss matters related to the running of our College. Tea and refreshments will be offered.

8. A Teachers’ and Parents’ Meeting is organised for Friday 19th September 2008, at 8.15 pm, after the Blessing of the new College Year.
